We are so prone to insulating ourselves with pride, arrogance, and countless other selfish and self-centered attachments. Over and over we build towers of human achievement – careers, financial successes, families – and congratulate ourselves on our accomplishments.

But in the end, are we putting the right things at the center of our lives?

Abraham showed us what it means to stay centered in relationship to God, even when other interests could have threatened that simple pursuit. How can we live likewise?

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

Hebrews 11:8-10 (NIV)

14 For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.

Hebrews 13:14 (NIV)
